Strong 8K TV on Windows PC and Laptop

Worth setting up even if you never watch on it. A PC is the fastest way to prove whether a problem is your subscription or the device in the living room.

The setup

Windows

Install the Windows player

Download the installer from the Apps page and run it. Windows SmartScreen may warn that the publisher is unrecognised, which is normal for software distributed outside the Microsoft Store. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

Open the player and enter the server, username and password from your account. VLC also works if you would rather not install anything else, though it will show you a channel list without a proper guide.

Test across groups

Open one channel from sport, one from entertainment and one from the film library. If all three play cleanly here but not on your television, the subscription is healthy and the problem sits with the television or its network connection.

Use it to check the guide

The guide renders faster on a PC than anywhere else, which makes it the easiest place to browse next week for something to record a reminder about, or to check whether a fixture is being carried before kick-off.

Worth knowing

Things that catch people out

  • A wired PC is the most reliable evidence you can gather before troubleshooting anything else. Take a note of what works there.
  • VLC will open an M3U link in seconds through Media, then Open Network Stream. It is the quickest sanity check that exists.
  • If a channel plays on the PC and stutters on the television, stop investigating the subscription and start investigating the Wi-Fi.

No subscription yet?

Activation runs on its own and finishes in about two minutes. The login lines appear on screen and land in your inbox at the same moment, so you can start this guide straight away.
